Appliances (large or major)

Appliances (large or major)

white goods, fridges, freezers,

Our household appliances—fridges, freezers, washing machines and dryers—are some of the mainstays of comfortable living. When it’s time for them to retire, however, they can turn from a best friend into the guest that just won’t leave. Large appliances, otherwise known as white goods, are banned from Hartland Landfill as garbage—there are many viable alternatives to landfilling these bulky items, all of which help to improve our environment.  Dishwashers can be made of mostly plastic or mostly metal.  Take a magnet to the outside of the side wall of the dishwasher.  If the magnet sticks you can recycle the diswasher as metal.  If the magnet does not stick the dishwasher is mostly plastic so it is garbage, but you can take any metal parts out and recycle them.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Dry your clothes on the line or on an indoor rack; wash full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine and use cold water to wash clothes. Avoiding unnecessary purchases is the best way to cut down on waste and overconsumption.

Search for brands with excellent recycling programs and repair records. Some will take your old appliance for recycling at no charge. Choose a model with the highest EnergyStar rating in your price range to ensure you’re getting the best energy savings. Buying more than one appliance? Purchase from the same store to reduce delivery trips.

Reuse

Many top brands are beginning to offer recycling and take back programs for old appliances. BC Hydro’s Fridge buyback program will pick up your old fridge, if it still runs, and pay you $30 for it. They can be reached at 1.866.516.4357.  Have your Hydro account number ready when calling.  Many energy efficient appliances are eligible for PST rebates at the point of sale. You can also offer your old machine through Craigslist, Used Victoria or donate it to a participating thrift store or refurbisher.

Recycle

Hartland Recycling Facility accepts white goods (there is a $20 additional fee for items that have or have had refrigerants), as do the listed companies below. Recycled appliances are separated into their component parts—metals, plastics and glass—and recovered to make new products.  Dishwashers that are mostly plastic or less than 80% metal cannot be recycled and are taken as garbage at Hartland.

The Environmental Story

Our large appliances are awkward, heavy and, in the case of refrigerating appliances, contain Freon, a refrigerant that can harm the ozone layer and air quality. Fortunately, there are a growing number of programs which accept large appliances or white goods for recycling and reuse.
