How do I go green?

Reduce

There’s simply no reason to buy non-rechargeable batteries these days. Rechargeables have up to 30 times less impact on air pollution and global warming than disposables (the equivalent to driving 2000 km less each year in your car). They can be used and reused, which reduces raw materials production, packaging waste and recycling costs.

Choose electronics with multiple functions to cut down on the number of batteries you use. Work plugged in whenever possible to save battery life and resist the urge to upgrade to new products. For emergency use, consider a wind-up flashlight and radio.

Reuse

Choosing rechargeables is the best way to reuse batteries. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to get the best use out of your batteries.

Recycle

Call2Recycle is a local program that works with participating retailers (such as Pharmasave, London Drugs, The Source, Staples, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Home Hardware, Sears and Slegg) to recycle rechargeable batteries. This program has recently expanded to include non-rechargeable batteries as well.  Bring your old batteries to any of the listings on their website for recycling.

Hartland Landfill accepts batteries of all types at its Recycling Area, in residential quantities.

Not all of the facilities listed below are part of the Call2Recycle program.  If they are not they may charge a recycling fee.
