Bronze is a metal alloy composed of copper and another element such as tin, phosphorus, aluminum or silicon. Originally used as a tool, weapon, sculpture and building materials during and after the bronze age, bronze is now used for sculpture, weather stripping, bearings, bushings and as a component of small electric motors. Bronze is recognized for its durability, strength and resistance to corrosion.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Avoid buying new bronze whenever possible—select an antique statue and buy used motors to save having to manufacture new parts.

Reuse

Give those bronze paper weights to a writer! Bronze can be given away or donated for reuse. Check the listings below.

Recycle

You can recycle bronze at any of the listings below. Recycled bronze is melted down and formed again, saving ecosystems and the environment.

The Environmental Story

Bronze is made by smelting copper and tin together; both metals must first be mined from the earth. Copper mining, along with gold and silver mining, is responsible for devastating environmental destruction in rainforests around the world—mines deforest an area, release harmful chemicals such as mercury and cyanide, which can end up in nearby water bodies and can cause flooding, erosion and the death of localized flora and fauna.
