Aluminum is one of nature’s great recycling success stories. Aluminum cans are completely, endlessly recyclable. One pound of aluminum makes approximately 30 cans; using recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than mining new bauxite ore for new aluminum. It’s one packaging product you can feel good about using, and reusing.

How do I go green?
Reduce
In this particular case, choosing aluminum cans may be a better option than plastic bottles when choosing a soft drink or juice, as recycling options are easier on the environment and longer lasting. Recycling aluminum does not involve downcycling—an old can is made into a new can, over and over, unlike plastic, which is usually remade into a lower quality plastic. Still, it’s best to use only what you need.
Reuse
The best way to reuse aluminum cans, unless you’re using them for art projects, is to wash them and drop them in your blue box and let the recycling process begin.
Recycle
All clean aluminum cans, and foil and pie plates can go in your curbside Blue Box. For additional drop-off points, including depots that refund the beverage container deposit, see the listings below.

The Environmental Story
Aluminum is made from strip mined bauxite ore, using sodium hydroxide and extremely high temperatures. The highest reserves of bauxite are found in Guinea, Australia, Vietnam and Jamaica, but the supply is not endless and aluminum is one of the most difficult metals to refine. Because of the amount of energy needed to create new aluminum, as well as the acidification problems associated with its production, recycling aluminum is far easier on the environment.
