Automotive batteries are a dangerous but necessary part of today’s car dependant culture. Their production can be hard on the environment and even on human health. Fortunately, they’re also one of the easiest items to recycle in BC.

How do I go green?
Reduce
The best solution to lead contamination problems is to lower the world’s need for lead by going car free. Many residents in the Capital Region live close enough to work and schools that cycling, walking and public transit is are viable alternatives. Until our culture learns to be less car dependant, there will continue to be a need for lead acid car batteries.
Can’t go completely car free? Try reducing your car dependence. Leave your vehicle at home once or more a week; carpool, bike or walk to work. Stop and think—do you really need that second family car? Less wear and tear on your vehicle, by driving less, means parts, including batteries, will last longer.
Reuse

The Environmental Story
About 70% of the lead manufactured worldwide goes into car batteries. The majority of these batteries are manufactured in developing countries, where health and environmental standards can be significantly lower than in North America or Europe. The manufacturing of lead acid batteries continues to cause human health problems throughout the developing world. Lead poisoning can lead to developmental and neurological impairment in children, and in high doses, even death.
