Car radiators are just one component of car manufacturing. Traditionally made from brass, copper and lead, modern radiators are now made of an aluminum core with a plastic tank.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Get the most out of your radiator by keeping it topped up with the proper mixture of antifreeze and de-ionized water (not tap water). Drive your car less, to prolong the life of all components.
Reuse
Many shops accept used radiators for refurbishment, and will sell you a refurbished one when yours wears out. Buying used or refurbished is almost always a better bet for the environment, as it prevents the extraction of further resources from the earth.
Recycle
Recycle your old radiator at any of the establishments listed below.

The Environmental Story
Radiators function as the main part of your vehicle’s cooling system, transferring heat from the engine. In order to do this, however, radiators must be filled with a mixture of water and antifreeze, which is made of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. Both of these petroleum based products are poisonous and a danger to the environment. When disposing of a used radiator from your vehicle, make sure you empty it first into a sealable container, to prevent contamination of soil and water. Dispose of radiator antifreeze at the Hartland Hazardous Waste Drop-off Facility.
