Broken cups? Cracked china? That old bowl from your great grandmother finally gave up the ghost? Porcelain and pottery may have come from the earth originally, but there’s no reason to toss them in the landfill, where they take years upon years to decompose and use valuable landfill space.

Reduce
Don’t throw away your family’s old china—use it! Beautiful things are meant to be in use, so instead of buying new dishes, pull out the “best” china and give it some air!
Reuse
Need more plates after that tumultuous dinner party? Try one of the many second hand or thrift stores around town—they often have a fabulous selection of both crockery and fine china, and you can rest easy that you’re not using more of the earth’s resources when you choose to buy used items.
Recycle
Broken or worn out china, ceramics and porcelain can be brought to a recycling facility listed below.

The Environmental Story
Most ceramic and china is clay or bone based, with other minerals added for strength. Newer varieties can be made of pyrex, which is a type of glass, or other materials. None are particularly hazardous for the environment, but there other options far superior to landfilling these bulky items.
