Light strings or strands add to the festivities year round, brightening up a ho hum kitchen with chili peppers, trick or treating with glowing pumpkins, or adding to the celebration of light that is Diwali. Whether you want to update your look or need to retire a string because replacement bulbs are no longer available, or your pet rabbit chewed through them, these don't need to go out in the trash.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Replace light strands only when no longer in working order and replace bulbs instead of going for a new look. Don't leave lights on unattended. Realise the impact of one or two strands instead of overdoing things with dozens, like the Griswold Family in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
Reuse
Switching to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights saves on electricity and the need to replace fading or problem strands, but often replacing them on environmental grounds results in a sudden need to dispose of half a dozen strands that are in working order. Give these lights to a young family or friend or donate sets in original packaging to charity. Reuse the insulated wire to light the village around a miniature rail set. Strip the copper wire from the vinyl cable and use it for odd jobs around the house. A bowl of spent coloured bulbs makes for a pretty décor item or use the wire to add hooks for reuse as ornaments.
Recycle
Strands with light bulbs removed are accepted for recycling at sites around the CRD as listed below.

The Environmental Story
Light strands make those festive times magical but the relative low cost means this cabling of pvc and copper wire is all too often dumped for a new look. Like drink yokes, these sturdy chains can harm scavenging wildlife who get tangled up in search of food.
Save the Date!
This year, Hartland Happening is on Sunday June 24th.
