Clothes Hangers

hangers,

Closets bursting full of these useful yet awkward to store items? Millions of hangers are produced annually with only 10-15% reused or recycled.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Bring hangers from home when picking up your dry cleaning so you don't end up with duplicates. A pair of pants, a top and a jacket can comfortably hang wrinkle free on the same hanger by investing in long lasting, sturdy wooden hangers.

Reuse

Many dry cleaners will accept hangers for reuse, and some second-hand stores may also take them. Wire hangers can be reused for a variety of projects around the house and garden—reshape the hook for dying eggs at Easter or use a number of hangers as stakes in the garden.

Recycle

The component parts of hangers are mostly recyclable, though not in the curb side blue box. Metal, plastic and wood each go to different facilities. Go to MetalPlastic or Wood Waste (lumber) for lists of facilities that accept those materials.  The operators listed below will also accept hangers for reuse and/or recycling:

The Environmental Story

Hangers are generally composed of recyclable materials, but all too frequently end up in the trash, as blue box programs tend not to include hanger collection.  Plastic hangers may or may not be recyclable due to the low grade plastics used in production.
