Clothing/Textiles

Closets bursting not only with hangers but with clothing going back decades? Cleaning out your closet will open up precious storage space and can help local charities when disposed of properly.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Buy classic clothes made to last and avoid purchasing too many pieces that follow trends and are of low quality. This doesn't have to mean your style will be boring, as one or two key fashion forward pieces can update a quality classic look with little effort and low environmental impact. Shop at stores that use sustainable materials, organic cotton and practise fair trade.

Reuse

Shop at second hand stores. Use old t-shirts for rags and shoe laces to tether up household items. Still have acid wash jeans from the eighties kicking around in your attic? These are back in fashion again and your young relative or neighbourhood teen may be keen to take these off your hands.

Recycle

Second hand stores are keen to accept clean and reusable items and some will come to pick items up from you.  The outlets below will accept your used clothing and/or textile waste.

The Environmental Story

Clothing and textiles come in a seemingly endless array of synthetic and natural materials. Many of these fabrics will not decompose and natural fibres such as wool, release ozone damaging methane during the decomposition process; an estimated 7 kilograms of textile waste per person ends up in Canadian landfills every year. Non-reusable textile waste can be recycled into new raw materials for the automotive, home and office furnishing, and paper industries.
