Concrete has been ubiquitous in our built environment since the Ancient Romans. This composite of cement, water, gravel and sand is a desirable building product due to its versatility, strength and low cost.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Consider alternate options for your driveway or garden paths. Gravel or recycled wood chipping provide a similar function, may have less environmental impact, and are better for drainage.
Reuse
Reuse old paving stones as flowerpot stands or to create a decorative border around a raised flowerbed.
Recycle
The facilities below will accept concrete for recycling and reuse in new building projects. Old concrete is broken down, metal rebar is separated for further recycling and the concrete aggregate is used to make new concrete or reused as a foundation material for roads and runways.

The Environmental Story
The manufacture of concrete depletes natural resources including water and fossil fuels while releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the curing process, which lasts long after it appears to have hardened, absorbs oxygen and releases more carbon dioxide. Run off of water from rainfall and flooding on city sidewalks, streets, and highways results in greater soil erosion due to the non-porous nature of the material. Since this sturdy material will withstand the test of weather and time, concrete should not end up in a landfill. Concrete is banned from Hartland Landfill.
