Grease poured down your sink, garburator, or toilet will leave clogging deposits along pipes and drains, slowing down the treatment process and even once treated, contaminate our waterways.  It is equally harmful for septic systems. Following a few simple disposal methods will lessen the damaging impact of cooking fats, oils, and greases on our environment.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Go vegetarian or cook meat sparingly and select lean, local options from your butcher.

Reuse

Pour grease into a sturdy container and reuse it for cooking oil. Cooking potatoes in bacon fat makes for a particularly tasty side of hash-browns! Mix grease with birdseed and place it in a reusable container in the freezer. This tasty blend will attract and feed many birds.

Recycle

The Hartland Landfill Recycling Facility accepts grease and used cooking oil in residential quantities. Save uncontaminated used oil and grease in clean, sealed metal or plastic containers and take it to the Hartland Landfill Recycling Facility to be recycled into industrial fuel, soap, cosmetics, animal feed, among other consumable items.

The Environmental Story

Capital Region residents pour an estimated one million kilograms of fat, oils and greases (FOG) down household drains annually. FOG can clog pipes and treatment screens causing drainage problems, using excess energy in the treatment process and depleting oxygen from our waterways.  FOGs are also harmful to septic systems.  Any small deposit of grease should be wiped off with a kitchen towel (paper towel) and thrown into the garbage. Simply pouring excess grease into a used paper coffee cup or milk carton and allowing it to harden before throwing it out will also help keep FOG from our sewers and waterways, but there are other green options for your used cooking grease.
