Digital Picture Frames

Digital Picture Frames

Digital photo frames are one of those items that gets used or sits in a bottom drawer until the next time you declutter.  With fast-paced technology improvements and updates, electronics become out of date much more quickly than other appliances. Currently, Canadians toss more than 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste into landfills each year.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Consider using a regular picture frame and changing pictures monthly, or if you have a computer you can use the same digital photo application on your desktop.

Reuse

Donate your old, working digital frame to a charity, community group, school or church. Offer it for free through Craigslist or UsedVictoria.  Be sure to delete your photos.

Recycle

Digital photo frames are now part of the Product Stewardship program for electronic waste.  They can be taken to a number of drop-off locations throughout the CRD for free for recycling - you've already paid for this service with an environmental handling fee (EHF) when you bought it.

The Environmental Story

Should I put together a traditional physical album with printed photos mounted on heavy paper pages, or should I use a digital picture frame that displays images on an LCD screen? Each method has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to cost, time, and of course, energy use.

A physical album can be an impressive gift, and is quite portable. Once it’s made, it doesn’t require any energy or technology – other than a light bulb so it can be enjoyed at night. Printing and mounting photos can be tedious and expensive—and it uses plenty of resources--but it’s a rewarding activity.

On the other hand, if I show the images on a digital picture frame, they can be displayed all day long, in various different arrangements with transitions and music. The frame needs to be near an AC outlet, which means it requires a small, constant stream of electricity regardless if anyone is watching. That might add up quickly.

Decisions, decisions. What to do?..... whatever you feel the receipent of the gift would like the most.
