Flammable Liquids

Flammable Liquids

Poison,

Cleaning out the garage or the utility closet could leave you with a proliferation of aerosols, tins, pots and jars of flammable liquids such as camp fuel, kerosene, acetone, paint stripper and turpentine.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Common sense is to buy only what you plan to use for a given project or season. Due to the short shelf-life of many of these products, there's no need to stockpile flammable liquids.

Reuse

Check with your friends, family and colleagues before safely disposing of fuel and solvents, as they may well be planning a weekend camping trip or weekend DIY project and will be pleased to take them off your hands.

Recycle

Flammable liquids are part of the Household Hazardous Waste collection at the Hartland Recycling Area in residential quantities and at the alternate locations listed below, always phone the location first. All residential Household Hazardous Waste is accepted free of charge.

The Environmental Story

Flammable liquids will ignite at low temperatures and pose serious fire risks when stored improperly. If sent to a landfill, these liquids can cause devastating contamination by seeping into our groundwater and soils. Flammable liquids should bear the Flammable Liquids symbol or list a flashpoint temperature below 37.8 degrees Celsius. Always keep flammable liquids in original containers for easy identification later and to safely transport these items for disposal or recycling. Flammable liquids are collected free of charge at designated recycling areas across BC as part of the legislated Product Stewardship program coordinated by the Product Care Association. An eco fee is included in the cost each time a flammable liquid is purchased to cover the cost of safe disposal or recycling.
