Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) includes leftover household products that are marked with warning symbols such as Flammable, Corrosive, Explosive or Poison, as well as any waste from your home that you consider dangerous or of which you are unsure.
These materials can be dropped off, free of charge, at the Hartland Recycling Facility. If you are unsure whether or not an item or material is considered HHW, please call the CRD Hotline, or the professionals at your local recycling depot for advice or follow this link: Household Hazardous Waste
Some of the items considered Household Hazardous Waste are Flammable Liquids; Batteries; Pesticides and any other substance that is toxic in any way.

How do I go green?
Reduce
The best way to prevent these chemicals from entering the environment is not to buy them. Use baking soda and vinegar as a household cleaner. Avoid toxic drain cleaners and bleaches (especially if you’re on a septic system) and drive your car less to cut down on petroleum and maintenance products.
Consider using environmentally friendly cleaners, low VOC paints and alternatives to pesticides. Go with the 'greenest' products you can find. Buy only what you absolutely need, no more.
Reuse
Reuse of these products is difficult (unless you’re sharing with friends), so use less to reduce your impact.
Recycle
The Hartland Landfill Recycling Facility will accept Household Hazardous Waste for safe disposal, for free.
There are product stewardship programs for paint, batteries, pesticides, compact fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and much more listed in this directory.
Return all household hazardous waste to the Hartland Landfill Recycling Facility or other facilities listed for free. You’ll be keeping fish, animals and humans happier and healthier. Check the listings below for more return alternatives.

The Environmental Story
Household Hazardous Waste should not go into the garbage or down the drain. It requires safe, responsible handling.
Did You Know?
Just one table spoon of granular drain cleaner can kill all of the beneficial bacteria in a 1000 gallon septic tank, causing potential septic system malfuction. Use a plumbers snake or plunger instead.
