Paper milk cartons can be challenging to know what to do with as they can’t be recycled with regular paper, due to their plastic content. But fear not! Milk cartons in BC can be returned through a program with the BC Dairy Council, who helps keep our beautiful province clean.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Some companies offer milk in glass containers, which are sturdy but easily recycled. Buy milk in large containers to reduce packaging and choose a local company with a good social and environmental record.
Reuse
Milk cartons can be used in kid’s art projects or to store nails and screws in your work shed.
Recycle
Clean milk cartons are now accepted in the CRD blue box with your other containers. Unlike juice boxes, they’re not subject to the BC Recycling Regulation. However, in 2006 the BC Dairy Council launched a used milk container recycling program. You can return all clean milk and milk substitute containers to selected local bottle depots. Since no deposit is paid on these containers, no payment will be made for returned milk containers. See the listings below for depot locations.

The Environmental Story
Paper milk cartons are made from paper with a thin plastic coating to keep them waterproof. Paper used for the carton is bleached before manufacture. Some research posits that dioxins may be present in milk kept in paper cartons; the dioxins result from the paper bleaching process.
