All too often an empty or near empty motor oil container is discarded carelessly at the side of the road or into the trash.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Walk, cycle, or car pool to cut down on motor oil use. Choose a push mower, which besides reducing motor oil use will exercise your body and reduce noise pollution.
Reuse
Due to the high possibility of oil contaminating the container walls, the best reuse of a motor oil container is as a vessel to store used motor oil prior to depositing it at a recycling facility.
Recycle
The facilities below will accept motor oil containers for recycling. These containers may end up as new containers, flowerpots, piping, guardrails, fence posts or patio furniture. Check out the BC Used Oil Management Association website for multiple recyclers of motor oil containers.

The Environmental Story
Motor oil containers are made of petroleum-based plastics and should not be mixed with standard plastic containers due to the high possibility of oil contaminants. A single drop of motor oil can contaminate a million drops of water. The BC Used Oil Management Association levies an Environmental Handling Charge (EHC) on the sale of motor oil, motor oil filters, and motor oil containers to help cover the cost of diverting these potentially toxic items from landfills or even worse, our waterways.
