Cardboard is one of the first items that comes to mind when thinking about recycling. Accepted at depots and in the curbside recycling program, cardboard is relatively easy to recycle. The CRD has been recycling cardboard with the Blue Box program since 2000. Corrugated cardboard has been banned from Hartland land fill since 1993.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Buy products that use less packaging or order one big pizza instead of several small ones. Resist delivery pizza and go out for pizza or make one from scratch.

Reuse

Use grease and food free pizza boxes in the garden as a sheet mulching layer or as a brown layer in your compost. There are a number of creative corrugated cardboard reuse suggestions here: box art or make a chair.

Recycle

Pizza boxes are acceptable at the curb through the CRD recycling program. Remove liners and food waste, unfold, flatten the box, bind it with string along with any other corrugated cardboard materials (max. bundle size: 36”x18”x18”) and place it with your blue bag and box.

The Environmental Story

Most types of cardboard can be recycled up to five times before wood fibers shorten and begin to disintegrate. Your old packing or pizza box can be put to good use many times before reaching the end of its lifespan. Using any cardboard, however, means the harvesting of trees, as new fibres must be blended with old ones for adequate strength.
