Plastic bottled beverages are ideal for a refreshing drink on the go and at the gym. Unfortunately, these low cost and seemingly disposable containers can have some serious environmental consequences.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Why buy bottled water when we have fabulous and clean tap water? Purchase and sterilize a reusable container that you can fill from the tap or a larger beverage bottle.
Reuse
Refill the bottle a few times before recycling it. Cut it in half and leave the lid on to make a clever picnic or camping drinking goblet.
Recycle
All plastic beverage containers and caps can be recycled in the curbside Blue Box program. Rinse and separate the caps. You may also return these bottles to grocery stores or a return-it depot for return of your deposit; see location details below:

The Environmental Story
Most plastic beverage containers are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or No. 1 Plastic, which like other Plastics, can only be downcycled and in some form or another may end up filling up our landfills and waterways. In BC, Encorp levies a fee at point of purchase on many plastic beverage containers to offset the cost of recycling and offer the incentive of a refund for return of these items into the recycling stream. Your empty bottles will be baled and shredded and perhaps reconstituted as a fleece jacket, or a new bleach or motor oil bottle.
Save the Date!
