Plastic bags have received a lot of media attention in the last few years, and for good reason. They are one of the most ubiquitous items in our daily lives—they hold our groceries and our shopping, we use them as garbage bin liners and to carry everything under the sun.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Recently, the resurgence of reusable cloth and woven bags has allowed us to cut plastic bag use at the point of sale. Reusable bags can be stored in your car, backpack, purse or bicycle bag for easy access. Use reusable bags not just for groceries, but when shopping at the hardware store, for clothing, the pharmacy or takeout food. When at the grocery store, put your fruits and vegetables directly into your shopping cart, rather than first into a produce bag. Hang reusable bags on your front door handle as a reminder to bring them each morning. Shop with a woven basket , pretend you’re in Europe and enjoy the knowledge that you’re helping keep plastic out of our ecosystems! Take the pledge to go plastic bag free!
Reuse
Wash and reuse any plastic bags you do acquire. Use them for lunches, to line your garbage can, to pick up pet litter or as a receptacle for cooled fats, oils and grease from cooking.
Recycle
Many grocery stores have take back programs for clean, dry, used plastic bags. Bags and film plastic can also be taken to a recycling depot, listed below.
Though recycling is a good option for bags you have already accumulated, the logistics of recycling plastic bags and the limited products bags can be feasibly remade into make refusing the best option of all.

The Environmental Story
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that close to a trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year. Millions of these end up outside of landfills—in drainage ditches or in the ocean. More than a million birds and 100,000 whales, seals, sea turtles and other marine mammals are killed from eating or becoming entangled in plastic bags each year. Approximately 5% of plastic bags are currently recycled; bags in the landfill can take 1,000 years to decompose. Even then, plastic molecules just get smaller—they don’t disappear, which can wreak havoc on terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
It’s obvious that plastic bags, which require a non-renewable resource to produce and energy to recycle, are one of the great environmental concerns of our age. But what to do to halt the damage to the earth’s soils, rivers, oceans and wildlife? Pick one from a host of solutions that can help the environment and save resources.
