Tetra Pak revolutionised the packaging and distribution of food products in the 1950's. Tetra Pak is now the most widely used food packaging supplier worldwide. In BC, we pay a deposit every time we purchase a Tetra Pak drink carton, which is used to offset recycling costs through the Encorp Recycling Program. Consumers receive all or a portion of this deposit back when returning their clean used cartons to point of purchase or recycling depots.

How do I go green?
Reduce
Larger juice cartons now come with resealable lids. Instead of purchasing a supply of small juice boxes, get a large one to keep in the fridge and drink from cups or refillable containers. The Canadian Diabetes Association recommends consuming only one small glass of juice a day. The next time you’re thirsty, have a glass of tap water instead of reaching for a juice box. Want the nutrients in the juice? Reach for a real piece of fruit, where you’ll get the fibre as well as the vitamin C.
Reuse
Cutting open Tetra Pak drink cartons reveals the silver interior, which can be a desirable material for kids crafting projects. There are number of websites outlining how to make a Tetra Pak wallet from an old carton.
Recycle
Clean Tetra Pak containers are now accepted in the CRD blue box with your other containers. You may also wash out and flatten drink boxes and return them to the point of purchase (limit 20) or to one of the depots listed below for refund of your deposit. Tetra Paks will be sent to a facility that separates the composite materials through a soaking process, the paper slurry is used to produce new paper or cartons and the foil and polyethylene is skimmed off for further recycling.

The Environmental Story
Tetra Pak drink boxes are a lightweight, easy to store and transport alternative to glass and plastic bottles. The construction of paper from sustainable forest sources, layered with aluminum and polyethylene allows for long term food preservation at room temperature. Billions of these cartons have ended up carelessly thrown into the trash, but over the last few decades many moves have been made to recycle this composite material.
