Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms

smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, CO2 alarms,

Smoke alarms detect smoke and issue a visible or audible signal to householders to warn of the presence of smoke.   Smoke alarms are powered by a battery and/or hardwired to a building’s electrical system.   Carbon monoxide (CO) alarms detect dangerous levels of CO and issue a visible or audible signal to occupants to warn of the presence of CO.
In collaboration with the major brand owners of these products, the B.C. Product Care Association has developed Alarm Recycle, a program for safe disposal of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.  The program includes a province-wide collection system where consumers can drop off used smoke and CO alarms for recycling and proper disposal.
The program launched on October 1, 2011 to coincide with Fire Prevention Week.
AlarmRecycle accepts used or expired smoke alarms, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, and combination smoke & CO alarms for recycling. To find your nearest drop-off location, visit www.alarmrecycle.ca or call toll-free 1-800-667-4321.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Smoke and CO alarms should be in every home.  Reduction does not apply to these items.

Reuse

Given the requirement that new smoke and CO alarms be certified for safety purposes and the absolute importance that they function properly in the case of an emergency, the repair or reuse of returned smoke or CR alarms is not considered viable at this time.

Recycle

Go to facilities to view the current list of drop off facilities.  More facilities may be added at later dates.  As will all Product Stewardship items, eco fees will be charged when purchasing new smoke and CO alarms.  These eco fees are used to cover the cost of the coresponding recycling programs.

The Environmental Story

While the principal purpose of smoke and CO alarms is safety, the industry has taken into account environmental considerations. Efforts have been made by the smoke and CO alarm industry to reduce the environmental impact of their products. New ionization foil stamping technology ensures less waste and precious metals are produced in this stage of the manufacturing process. The amount of plastic and other materials in a typical smoke alarm has also decreased substantially over the past two decades while the use of recycled materials in product packaging has increased. Finally, there is a general trend in the industry away from 9 volt towards 3 volt alarms to reduce the number of batteries required for product operation.

Did You Know?

The BC Fire Code was amended in March of 2010 to require smoke alarms in all dwelling units, including private homes.
It is recommend that we replace smoke alarms after ten years and CO alarms after five to seven years, due to the build-up of dust and other contaminants on the alarm sensor. Since 2007, manufacturers have been required to place a sticker on their products reminding consumers when their alarms should be replaced.
Radiation: The amount of radiation in close proximity to an intact and approved ionization smoke alarm is less than other consumer products such as colour televisions.
