How do I go green?

Reduce

You can save money and household clutter by resisting the urge to buy new stereo equipment and other electronics. Staying with your current model is one of the best things you can do for the environment.

Choose a multi-function model to cut down on components and choose EnergyStar certified products.

Reuse

Old stereo equipment can often live a second life with someone else in the region—try advertizing your stereo for sale or for free on Craigslist, UsedVictoria or Ebay. Some charities also accept gently used equipment.  Just be sure your stereo is in truly good working order.

Recycle

Stereos are now part of the Product Stewardship program for electronic waste.  They can be taken to a number of drop-off locations throughout the CRD for free for recycling - you've already paid for this service with an environmental handling fee (EHF) when you bought it.  Not all of the facilities listed below are part of the Product Stewardship program.  If they are not they may charge a recycling fee.

The Environmental Story

More than 140,000 tonnes of electronics waste annually accumulates in Canadian landfills, where hazardous materials may seep into our groundwater.

The Electronics Stewardship Association of BC has expanded its current electronics recycling program to include stereos, speakers, audio and video recording and playback systems as well as all types of telephones. Stereos are returnable through the “Return It” program.

Did You Know?

E Stewards

The Basel Action Network is an organization dedicated to upholding the Basel Convention, which bans the export of hazardous waste to developing countries. BAN has developed an independently accredited list of e-Stewards, leading North American electronics recyclers who uphold the highest standard of environmental and social responsibility. By using an e-Steward, you can be assured your computer parts are being recycled in a responsible manner.
