How do I go green?
Reduce
Don’t leave old tires in a pile in the backyard. There are toxins that can leach out into damp soil below which will pollute groundwater. Remember that a pile of old tires can act as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which may carry disease, or as a place for vermin to hide.
Reuse
You may have a project at home that you could use one of those old tires for, such as a tire swing for the kids, bumpers for the dock or a soft landing point for your car’s front bumper in a tiny garage.
Recycle
Tire Stewardship B.C. has a Return to Retailer program, which is a program where retailers across the province have volunteered to take back up to 4 car tires, clean and off rim and during business hours from the public for free. This option is offered for those folks that for some reason to do not dispose of their tires at time of purchasing new ones and then eventually look for a disposal option after the fact.
Tires can then be recycled into many different products, including landscaping material, footwear and road resurfacing material. For a list of facilities that recycle tires, visit Tire Stewardship B.C.
Hartland Recycling Area will take your old tires and rims as well.
The maximum number accepted at Hartland Recycling Area is 5 per visit and tires over 42 cm in diameter are not accepted for recycling; they must go into the garbage after the metal rims are removed and recycled. The $6 Recycling Area entry fee applies to tires at Hartland.
