How do I go green?
Reduce
Purchase the most durable bike tires you can afford and try to resist switching to the latest spiffy new fad in bike tires until you actually need new tires.
Reuse
Check out RecycleScene for belts, wallets, leashes and other neat items made out of bike tires. Bike tubes make great hinges for compost box lids and the tires can be made into sandals. There are many videos on the internet with instructions for bike tire reuse.
Recycle
Tire Stewardship BC in partnership with the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada and the local biking community has launched a new bike tire and tube recycling program as of June 1, 2011. Tires will be accepted at certain bike retailers and at the recycling area at Hartland Landfill. Check with your local bike shop or go to Tire Stewardship BC for the complete list. Please note a list of drop off locations will not be available until late June.
We will also be accepting bicycle tires and tubes in a designated bicycle tire bin in the recycling area at Hartland Landfill. The $6 Recycling Area entry fee applies to tires at Hartland.

The Environmental Story
The impact of cycling on other living creatures and on the ecological balance is small. A bicycle uses only a tiny amount of oil. The amount of steel and other materials in its construction is less than two percent of that found in a small car. A bicycle's tires and tubes are the greatest waste, as bike tires last only a few thousand miles at most; however, automobile tires, while lasting longer, are much heavier. A bicycle burns no fossil fuels: a bike that replaces an automobile for all travel is equal to the planting of 170 trees. (from Ken Kifer's Bike Pages )
Did You Know?
Tires will be recycled into useful and environmentlayy friendly products such as playground surfacing and coloured landscaping mulch. Tubes will be manufactured into bottle stoppers.
