They’re big, bulky, necessary parts of our lives, but when you switch to a new, water saving toilet, what do you do with the old one?

How do I go green?

Reduce

Think twice before adding that second (or third) bathroom! How many places to get clean does one family need?

Reuse

Have a green thumb? Turn that bowl into a planter for your flowers!

Recycle

Used toilets, once non-porcelain parts have been stripped off, can be brought to Hartland Landfill for recycling, or to a recycling facility listed below.

The Environmental Story

Toilets are bulky items that take up an enormous amount of space in the landfill and don’t decompose quickly, to say the least. Porcelain can be ground down and used to make new porcelain items—it can also make an excellent drainage material. It’s a great substitute for gravel and can be used as a road base on highways.
